Why Deep Cleaning Your Kitchen Matters
Kitchens collect more germs than most rooms in a home. Grease sticks to walls. Bacteria hides in drains. Mold grows under appliances.
A proper deep clean:
- Kills harmful bacteria and mold
- Removes built up grease and odors
- Extends the life of your appliances
- Makes daily cleaning faster and easier
Experts recommend a full kitchen deep clean every one to three months.
What You Need Before You Start
Gather your supplies first. This saves time and keeps you focused.
Cleaning Supplies
- Dish soap and warm water
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- A degreaser spray
- Microfiber cloths
- A scrub brush and old toothbrush
- A mop and bucket
- Rubber gloves
- Trash bags
Once everything is ready, follow the steps below from top to bottom. This prevents dirt from falling onto already clean surfaces.
Step 1: Clear and Declutter Everything
Start by removing everything from countertops, shelves, and the inside of cabinets.
Throw away expired food. Donate items you never use. Wipe down every surface once it is empty.
This step makes the rest of the process much easier.
Step 2: Clean the Ceiling, Walls, and Cabinets
Look up first. Grease and dust collect on ceilings near the stove. Wipe the ceiling with a damp microfiber cloth.
For walls: Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap. Wipe down all wall surfaces. Pay extra attention to the area around the stove.
For cabinets: Use a degreaser on cabinet doors. Scrub the handles with an old toothbrush. Wipe the inside shelves with a damp cloth, then dry them fully before putting items back.
Step 3: Deep Clean the Oven and Stove
The oven and stove are the hardest working areas in your kitchen. They need the most attention.
Oven:
- Remove the oven racks and soak them in hot soapy water for 30 minutes.
- Apply a baking soda and water paste to the inside of the oven.
- Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
- Scrub with a sponge and wipe clean.
- Spray white vinegar to remove any baking soda residue.
Stove top: Remove burner grates and soak them. Wipe down the stove surface with a degreaser. Use a toothbrush to clean around the burners.
Step 4: Clean the Refrigerator Inside and Out
Empty the fridge completely. Throw away expired items.
Inside: Remove all shelves and drawers. Wash them in warm soapy water. Wipe the inside walls with a mix of white vinegar and water. Dry everything before putting it back.
Outside: Wipe the door, handle, and top of the fridge. Pull the fridge away from the wall and vacuum the coils at the back. This improves energy efficiency.
Step 5: Clean the Sink, Faucet, and Drain
The kitchen sink sees a lot of action every day.
- Scrub the sink basin with baking soda and a brush.
- Rinse with hot water.
- Clean the faucet with a vinegar soaked cloth to remove mineral buildup.
- Pour boiling water down the drain, followed by baking soda and vinegar. Let it fizz for five minutes, then flush with hot water.
This removes odors and clears mild blockages.
Step 6: Clean the Microwave and Small Appliances
Microwave: Place a bowl of water with lemon slices inside. Run it on high for three minutes. The steam loosens grime. Wipe the inside with a cloth. Clean the door and exterior with a damp cloth.
Small appliances: Clean the toaster by removing the crumb tray and shaking it out. Wipe the outside of the coffee maker. Descale it with a water and vinegar solution if needed.
Step 7: Wipe Down Countertops and Backsplash
Spray countertops with your chosen cleaner. Let it sit for two minutes. Wipe with a microfiber cloth in one direction.
For the backsplash, use a degreaser and a scrub brush. Pay attention to tile grout. A paste of baking soda and water works well on stubborn grout stains.
Step 8: Clean the Floor Last
Always clean the floor last. Dirt falls from higher surfaces during cleaning.
- Sweep or vacuum first to remove crumbs and dust.
- Mop with a suitable floor cleaner.
- Pay attention to corners and along the baseboards.
- Let the floor dry fully before walking on it.
Move appliances like the fridge and stove if possible to clean underneath them.
Quick Tips for Keeping a Clean Kitchen Longer
- Wipe spills right away. Do not let them dry.
- Clean as you cook each day.
- Wash dishes or load the dishwasher after every meal.
- Empty the trash before it overflows.
- Do a quick wipe of the stove after cooking.
Small habits prevent the big mess.
