5. Microplane 46720 Premium Classic Series Zester Grater

Microplane Premium is the kind of tool you need if you want to zip through a variety of fresh cooking ingredients like an expert chef.

It is surprisingly versatile, and you can use it to zest fruits and a variety of cheeses. You can also turn garlic, ginger, cinnamon, chili or nutmeg into fine powder. In fact, this zester can be used to get rid of burnt edges of cookies, bread, and scones, or even shave cork.

Since the handle features a smooth surface rather than hard plastic, this zester is comfortable to hold and use. You do not have to apply a lot of pressure to get it to work. It is manufactured in the U.S., rust-free, and features a stainless steel blade that was cut using photoetching technology. So, regardless of what you want to zest, the cutting surface will continue to be sharp for a long time.

Your recipes will taste great and have the right aroma and flavour, and the garnishes will not disappoint. Intended for smooth operation, the zester’s teeth skilfully peel off rinds without tearing, bruising or ripping, leaving behind the bitter pith.

6. Microplane 40020 Classic Zester/Grater

Sometimes, going classic is not such a bad idea, especially if it gets you the kind of zest you want for your meals.

The Microplane 400200 is quite a classic, having been around longer than most people, and has earned the respect of many cooking enthusiasts. It features a simple yet hard plastic that is attached to a steel blade in the shape of a wood chisel.

The Microplane cuts off just the right quantity of zest, leaving behind the unwanted pith that gives your food a bitter taste. For such a fantastic zester, it is incredibly low-priced. • Offers superior performance
  • Cuts the right amount of rind for your cooking
  • Fairly priced
Cons
  • There are knockoffs without a brand name

Buyer Guide

the best lemon zester
When looking for a zester for your kitchen, there are a few things you need to consider in order to find exactly what you need. Knowing what to consider ahead of time will help you make an informed choice. The headings we have provided in the section below include important features to look for when choosing a zester.

Type of Zester You Need

Zesters come with a variety of blades, which gives you the freedom to prepare to create a specific kind of zest from your citrus fruits.

Therefore, if your cooking requires you to grate tough food items, you need a sharp and durable zester with a stainless steel blade. Steel is known to be durable and will not dull from continuous or prolonged use.

However, if you usually zest softer food types, go for a zester that gives you a decorative outcome. You also have the option of purchasing more than one type of zester, if you tend to cook different kinds of food.

Therefore, figure out what your needs are to start with, then find the kind of equipment that will meet those needs. This is a matter of personal preference, and only you know what you want.

The Grip

The kind of grip installed on a zester is something that you should never overlook. The grip is important for the safety and operation of your zester. There are several different kinds of zesters in the market, and all have unique grips.

For starters, ensure that you find a zester whose handle is made from a non-slip material. A non-slip handle enables the user to grate edibles with ease, as you have enough leverage to handle the utensil. For instance, if you need a little more force to grate a foodstuff, you should be able to do it comfortably without loss of grip.

In addition, a non-slip handle makes it safer to handle your zester. If the tool slips while you are grating, you could easily cut or injure your fingers. For that reason, find a zester with a comfortable grip.

Sharpness

As stated before, the type of food you love to grate should be factored in when looking for a zester for your kitchen. Tougher foodstuffs need a zester that has more than one blade. On the other hand, softer foodstuffs grate just fine with a single blade.

The quality of steel used to make the zester influences its sharpness. Durable, high-quality steel not only zests tough foodstuffs, but it also stays sharp for a long time. Sharpness is important, especially if you use your zester on a regular basis and you do not wish it to become dull with time.

Ease of Cleaning

Time is not always on your side, and that means you will not always have the time to sit and clean your zester thoroughly. As a result, most people clean their kitchen tools in the dishwasher. You may have to do the same yourself from time to time. So, be sure to find a zester that is dishwasher-friendly.

If you tend to use your zester frequently, then find one that is easy to clean. Some zesters have crevices and slots where gratings can easily hide, causing an unhygienic environment. The best choice, in this case, is a stainless steel zester because it would be easy to clean.

Quality

When shopping for a quality zester, quality should be at the top of your list. Quality and value go hand in hand, so buy your utensil from a trustworthy manufacturer known for good-quality products.

As with any other kitchen implement, you should try to find a balance between frequency of use and quality. If you will not be using the zester that often, go for something affordable. Otherwise, it makes sense to purchase something with a superior quality if your zester is used for a commercial purpose.

Reasons to Have a Zester in Your Kitchen

The zesters we have listed here are among the best in 2021. All do a good job regardless of whether you want delicate strips or curled rinds. Zesters are important for your kitchen for the following reasons:

  • They can produce thread-like strips from your preferred citrus fruits. A zester is a great idea for those times you want infuse flavor into your meals.
  • They do not cost much, and you can easily make garnishes for decorating your dishes or drinks.
  • Most zesters come in a variety of constructions with no moving parts that can break down with repeated use.
  • You can make as little zest as a tablespoon or as much as you want, depending on your needs. Essentially, a zester simplifies your cooking process and allows you to decorate or add flavor and aroma to your food.

Final Word

Whether you are operating your own kitchen at home or running a professional one as part of your business, a zester will help you make those unique dishes with minimal effort. The right zester is one that addresses your needs.

We have reviewed seven zesters that we feel are at the top for this particular class of kitchen items. We feel they are well designed, easy to use, fairly priced, can be used for a while without losing functionality, and are easy to clean and store. What more can you ask for?

What is the big deal about lemon zesters? I have never needed to zest a lemon in my life. What does it even do for food? I have definitely used lemon juice in my food but the outside of a lemon? That’s just so weird to me.
